The health and well-being of communities and populations

Population health seeks to understand how biological, behavioral, environmental, social, and structural factors affect health.  This knowledge is used to design interventions to improve health for individuals, communities, and populations, and eliminate inequities in health.

At UCSF we are committed to:

  • advancing the science of population health and health equity
  • translating knowledge to improve health through clinical, community, public health, and policy partnerships
  • training the next generation to think broadly and act decisively with a clear understanding of the factors that contribute to health
  • leading locally, nationally, and globally  - in partnership with others - to advance population health and eliminate inequities in health

Social determinants of health have a major impact on patient health, community health, and healthcare access and utilization.
